French Drain Installation & Repair

Trusted by 1.2K+ Customers
Choosing the right materials is one of the most important decisions when installing a French drain. Using low-quality or incorrect materials is one of the leading reasons French drains fail prematurely in Greater Vancouver.
Here’s what actually works best based on our years of experience.
Best Choice: 4-inch rigid perforated PVC pipe
Why it’s better:
Avoid: Cheap flexible corrugated pipe for main runs (it’s okay only for short downspout connections).
Best Choice: Clean ¾-inch washed drain rock
Why size matters:
You should use at least 6–8 inches of gravel all around the pipe (bottom, sides, and top). This creates proper drainage space and protects the pipe.
Best Choice: High-quality non-woven geotextile fabric
Why it’s essential:
Never skip this layer — it’s one of the biggest reasons some French drains last 20+ years while others fail in 5.
Use the original excavated soil (topsoil) for the final layer after the gravel and fabric. Avoid using heavy clay directly on top of the fabric if possible.
Our wet climate, clay soils in many areas, and freeze-thaw cycles put extra stress on drainage systems. Investing in quality materials upfront almost always saves money in the long run by reducing maintenance and preventing early failure.
